Reflections for April 29, 2017

" There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold.  They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need."(Acts 4:34-35)

That's quite the utopian vision laid out here.  No needy people anywhere, everyone selling all their property and just sharing.  I know that works as long as everyone plays fair.  Communism on paper is a brilliant idea, but it doesn't take human nature into account.

Why this "biblical principle" has fallen out of favor should be obvious to every American, we don't like to share.  We want our property.  We may give some away but not all.  We probably don't trust that anyone will take care of us.

So while we may not desire to live in a commune, we might want to consider how we address the fact that poor and needy people still live among us and need our care.

Blessings,
Ed
